Europe's Club of the 1st Decade of the 21st Century (2001-2010)

Contrary to the manner in which the top club of each continent was determined for the 20th century (1901-2000), national competitions were held in all countries over the entire first decade after the turn of the millennium. All these national club competitions are taken as much into consideration for the monthly Club World Rankings as are the club competitions held by the continental Confederations and by FIFA. In doing so, each individual result of these aforementioned competitions is considered from start to finish. Hence, for any given continent, chances are the same for each club during the first decade (2001-2010), at least at the international level.

The yearly points scored by clubs in the Club World Ranking are added
from 2001 to 2010, yielding the continental club ranking. The
first-placed club is that continent's top club for the first decade.
Adding the yearly points also gives a far more realistical picture of
clubs that were particularly successful over one or more years than
using reciprocal position of the rankings from the yearly Club World
Ranking does. The top clubs can thus be determined the same way for each
of the six football continents.

Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Liechtenstein, San Marino and Montenegro
were disregarded for several reasons. Liechtenstein does not have a
league of its own, its clubs playing in the Swiss leagues. Montenegro
only gained independence in May 2006 (a sine qua non for a country
holding its own national championship). The other leagues were not
strong enough to be included. Thus, clubs from 47 European countries
plus Israel (affiliated with UEFA) were taken into account for the
rankings, to a total of over 1,500 clubs.

After nine of ten years, the standings were as follows: Manchester
United FC topped the European ranking, leading FC Barcelona by 17
points, Arsenal FC London by 66 points and the "Reds" from Liverpool.
Milan AC followed in fifth, leading local rivals FC Internazionale by 78
points. FC Bayern München came in seventh, leading Real Madrid CF by 8
points, and Chelsea FC (London) in ninth, leading AS Roma by 184 points.

After nine of ten years, the standings were as follows:

After nine years and nine months of the
first decade, "Barça" took the lead, but it remains to be seen who will
be Europe's Club of the 1st Decade by the end of the year, "Barça" or
"ManU". The each next two English and Italian clubs no longer stand any
chance of reaching either first or second place. The point difference
between places 3-9 is very slight, making it quite likely that some
clubs will switch positions yet. The only great difference between two
consecutive clubs in the all-European club rankings is between Chelsea
FC London (9th) and AS Roma (10th), which are more than 200 points
apart.

Three months before the end of the first decade, the
best-placed clubs of the European leagues of the second-highest group of
performance are FC do Porto (14th), Glasgow Celtic FC (15th) and PSV
Eindhoven (16th), those of the third-highest group of performance are FK
Partizan Beograd (50th), NK Dinamo Zagreb (60th) and PFK Levski Sofia
(62nd), and those of the fourth-highest group of performance are SK
Široki Brijeg (Bosnia-Herzegovina/287th), PFC Neftchi Baku
(Azerbaijan/313th) and FK Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina/316th). The final
European club rankings for this period (2001-2010) will not be
available until January 2011. Europe's Club of the 1st Decade will be
honoured at the World Football Gala 2011.
